4 Quotes on Fatherhood by Bill Cosby

We grew up with Bill Cosby, first in I SPY tv series with Robert Culp, Fat Albert cartoons, his comedy albums, and of course as Cliff Huxtable on The Bill Cosby Show in the 80s. This video is from one of Bill Cosby’s early stand up routines. Cosby was always funny without being vulgar.

“Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope.”

“A new father quickly learns that his child invariably comes to the bathroom at precisely the times when he’s in there, as if he needed company. The only way for this father to be certain of bathroom privacy is to shave at the gas station.”

“Always end the name of your child with a vowel, so that when you yell the name will carry.”

“Even though your kids will consistently do the exact opposite of what you’re telling them to do, you have to keep loving them just as much.”

~Bill Cosby

  1. Bill Cosby was a rare talent and and trailblazer. Think of the great black comedians and TV shows: Richard Pryor, Dick Gregory, Sanford and Son, Good Times, The Jeffersons: all were about being black in white America. They were important and relevant statements. From Cosby’s stand-up to I Spy to The Cosby Show, he was just Cosby. He asked to be taken on his own terms, and he was. Cosby and Robert Culp, his co-star on I Spy, made a decision never to mention or draw attention to race. “Our statement is a non-statement,” Culp said. Remember, this was 1965 and the approach was revolutionary. By the time of The Cosby Show, the whole country could relate to an American family who happened to be black rather than a black family who happened to be American.
