Around about the age of 40, things started to change for the female baby boomer.

She will have noticed a surge of testosterone prior to her Menopause which can leave her temperamental and sexually insatiable… just at the time when her male partner is experiencing a lessening of his own libido.

The onset of these hormonal changes can mean that some women also suffer from bouts of depression, especially if they are trying to do too much – for some ‘having it all syndrome’ can be more of a curse than the freedom that our mothers fought for.

From around 48-55, both these symptoms will have lessened considerably as the hormonal imbalance begins to settle and full Menopause sets in.

The absence of menstruation for 12 months is the marker that labels a female as menopausal. Once this momentous landmark has been passed, many women will be looking forward to being able to have great sex without the fear of pregnancy.

However, many women complain of a drop in their sexual desire for a variety of reasons, but the most common will be discomfort, due to lack of lubrication and vaginal thinning. These are both directly related to the reduction in oestrogen levels.

One of the best ways to alleviate the symptoms of this irritating deterioration is to follow a diet that is rich in soya products, as these contain natural phyto-oestrogens which help to bolster the body’s own production of this hormone.

It is also a good idea to remember the old adage, use it or lose it. Regular vaginal activity, whether it be sexually – with a partner or masturbation – or through the performance of kegel and pelvic floor exercises, is vital to retaining and restoring good muscle control and circulation to this area.

Make sure that you use all the aids at your disposal. It’s not wrong to need the help of additional lubricants and these can assist your body to prepare itself and add to enjoyment during sex.

Regular pelvic exercise is also key to avoiding future problems with stress incontinence. The lack of oestrogen affects muscle tone generally and the pelvic floor is no exception, whether the woman has had children or not. If you want to avoid leaking when you laugh or sneeze, start squeezing those Kegels.

A good exercise routine is also vital, as obesity can put great pressure on the sling of muscles that form the pelvic floor and hold all the organs in place. If the tension is allowed to slacken off, the uterus, bladder and bowel can all push through the muscle and prolapse into the cavities below them causing a variety of problems, including urinary and fecal incontinence.

Walking, tai chi, Pilates or yoga are relaxing hobbies that are still energetic enough to help burn off those calories and help to keep the maturing baby boomer in good shape, both mentally and physically, to continue to enjoy sex well into old age.
