However, what most people don’t realize is that excess abdominal fat in particular, is not only ugly, but is also a dangerous risk factor to your health. There are two types of fat that you have in your abdominal area. The first type that covers up your abs from being visible is called subcutaneous fat and lies directly beneath the skin and on top of the abdominal muscles.

The second type of fat that you have in your abdominal area is called visceral fat, and that lies deeper in the abdomen beneath your muscle and surrounding your organs. Visceral fat also plays a role in giving certain men that “beer belly” appearance where their abdomen protrudes excessively but at the same time, also feels sort of hard if you push on it.

Both subcutaneous fat and visceral fat in the abdominal area are serious health risk factors, but science has shown that having excessive visceral fat is even more dangerous than subcutaneous fat. Both of them greatly increase the risk your risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, sleep apnea, various forms of cancer, and other degenerative diseases. Now the important thing to realize is that just any old exercise program will not necessarily do the trick. The majority of people that attempt getting into a good exercise routine are NOT working out effectively enough to really stimulate the loss of stubborn abdominal fat. I see this every day at the gym.

    I almost spit my coffee out when I saw that picture… YIKES! Okay, once I got past that, I got down to business reading your post.

    Isn’t it wonderful that our bellies get visibly big so we get a WARNING about what we’re doing to our health with our bad diet? I got scared a some months ago when it finally (duh) dawned on me that the fat I could see ON my belly is actually forming INSIDE my belly… like around my organs, like, oh my heart for instance. :(

    That finally got me scared. Buying bigger jeans and hiding my protruding belly bulge behind big ol’ lady tops didn’t seem to make the same impact as realizing what was hidden under that increasingly large belly. I finally got serious and started to eat right and exercise daily.

    Today, I take a 12 to 15 mile bike ride every morning, then come home and lay out my food for the day. My diet consists (mainly) of whole grains like raw oatmeal, nuts, veggies, fruits, fish, chicken, yes some red meat (my husband likes to grill), and that’s pretty much it. I stay away from anything “packaged” as much as possible. I eat most things raw if I can. Anyway, the belly fat is coming off. I have added some floor ball exercises and free weights to my routine for bone strength. So, doing pretty good. I must admit to my vice here though… I do like me some red wine! Most women my age have found that to be our only real struggle with our diet. ;)

    When I’m done here I’m going to check out the videos. Maybe I can even get my husband interested! ;) I am interested to read more and learn more from you. Thanks for this great post!
