Ironically, Bosley’s death comes only a few days after that of another iconic ’50s TV parent, Barbara Billingsley, of Leave It to Beaver. Celebrity deaths seem to come in threes, which icon will leave us next.

Bosley’s best known role was the character Howard Cunningham, Richie Cunningham’s father, in the long-running sitcom Happy Days (See the 3 videos below). Bosley was also known for portraying Sheriff Amos Tupper on Murder, She Wrote. He also portrayed the eponymous Father Frank Dowling on the TV mystery series, Father Dowling Mysteries. Among myriad television appearances, one notable early performance was in the “Eyes” segment of the 1969 pilot episode of Rod Serling’s Night Gallery, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Joan Crawford.

Reacting to Bosley’s death, his Happy Days costar Henry Winkler expressed his sadness, telling Los Angeles’s KNX-1070 News Radio, “I’m in shock, I really am. I spoke to him just a few weeks ago and he seemed to be getting his strength back.”

The death of Happy Days star Tom Bosley left many saddened – and director Ron Howard without his onscreen dad.

“Tom’s insight, talent, strength of character and comic timing made him a vital central figure in the Happy Days experience,” says Howard, who played Richie Cunningham on the sitcom.

“A great father and husband, and a wonderful artist, Tom led by example, and made us all laugh while he was doing it,” Howard adds. “My last conversations with Tom reflected the love of life and peace of mind that he always maintained throughout his full and rewarding life.”

  1. Mark, what is this “3″ thing? It really seems true. Maybe we stretch the idea a bit and include a less celebrated person in order to wrap a neat package. Here we have 2 super-lovable TV parents of baby boomers pass on within hours of each other. Keeping with that theme, I was going to do a little research and boldly predict a #3 (another classic TV parent), but it’s too macabre. I wouldn’t mind if the number wasn’t fulfilled this time, or ever.

  2. Hey Terry,

Always appreciate your comments…It is a weird phenomenom but it happens time and again.
