Johnny Carson was of course a huge part of baby boomers history and he may have died in 2005, but tax filings uncovered by the Smoking Gun this week show the legendary “Tonight Show” host became Hollywood’s biggest philanthropist last year.

Tax returns filed in May for the fiscal year ending in June show that Carson quietly arranged for a donation of $156 million to his charitable trust, the John W. Carson Foundation. This donation makes Carson’s foundation Hollywood’s largest in terms of assets. The New York Post cites another large foundation — that of record producer David Geffen’s — by way of contrast: It doles out money from “only” $80 million in assets.

So where is Carson’s money going? Throughout his life, Carson gave to AIDS charities, environmental groups, schools, and foundations benefiting his home state, Nebraska.

“My success just evolved from working hard at the business at hand each day.”

“Never continue in a job you don’t enjoy. If you’re happy in what you’re doing, you’ll like yourself, you’ll have inner peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you will have had more success than you could possibly have imagined.”

“People will pay more to be entertained than educated.”

“Talent alone won’t make you a success. Neither will being in the right place at the right time, unless you are ready. The most important question is: “Are your ready?”

“The only thing money gives you is the freedom of not worrying about money.”

“If life were fair, Elvis would be alive and all the impersonators would be dead.”

“Never use a big word when a little filthy one will do.”

~Johnny Carson

It was said in Hollywood “If he (Johnny) liked you, then America liked you.”

Johnny Carson was a classic and the best ever at what he did. Below is a video with Johnny, Ed McMahon, and Buddy Hackett. The joke Buddy tells is considered one of the funniest jokes ever.

  1. Mark,

As you can imagine, Johnny Carson was quite popular here in Nebraska (his home state). He actually started his philanthropy long before he passed away. He contributed at least $10 million dollars to the University of Nebraska over the years without much fanfare. Carson was actually a very private person who shunned the media attention when away from the Tonight Show.

The video is great. If you don’t mind, I would love to post it on my blog. Thanks Mark.

  2. Hackett was born funny. He was doing schtick as a kid. Buddy turned down a chance to replace Curly Howard in the Three Stooges. Before the Carson gigs, he appeared as a regular guest on the Arthur Godfrey and Jack Paar Shows. He was a good dramatic actor, too. Cast as Lou Costello (can you think of anyone better?) opposite Harvey Korman as Bud Abbot in the television movie, Bud and Lou, he received rave reviews.
