Blog post Boomer54 Mark

What baby boomer doesn’t remember Mark Twain and at some point all of us have read “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. I remember watching Hal Holbrook in his one man play on tv portraying Twain in 1967, it was simply incredible how Holbrook captured Twain’s mannerism’s and wit. Please scroll to the bottom of this post to watch a video of Holbrook as Twain.

Today is Mark Twain’s 176th birthday and in honor here quotes from him on humor, life, love, death, honesty, actions, aging, anger, silence, religion, reading, courage, life’s troubles and compliments.

1. “Humor is the good natured side of a truth.”

2. “Humor must not professedly teach, and it must not professedly preach, but it must do both if it would live forever.”

3. “A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.”

4. “A person with a new idea is a crank until the idea succeeds.

5. “Love seems the swiftest, but it is the slowest of all growths. No man or woman really knows what perfect love is until they have been married a quarter of a century.”

6. “Every time you stop a school, you will have to build a jail. What you gain at one end you lose at the other. It’s like feeding a dog on his own tail. It won’t fatten the dog.”

7. “The Impartial Friend: Death, the only immortal who treats us all alike, whose pity and whose peace and whose refuge are for all–the soiled and the pure, the rich and the poor, the loved and the unloved.”

8. “Action speaks louder than words but not nearly as often.”

9. “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

10. “Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”

11. “Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured.”

12. “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”

13. “But who prays for Satan? Who, in eighteen centuries, has had the common humanity to pray for the one sinner that needed it most?”

14. “‘Classic.’ A book which people praise and don’t read.”

15. “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”

16. “Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.”

17. “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.”

18. “I can live for two months on a good compliment.”

In this portrayal, Holbrook/Twain responds in character to young people’s questions. As always, Holbrook captures the great author’s mannerisms and witty dialogue through excerpts from Twain’s writings.
