oscars 83rd academy awards 2011 224x300 Oscars 2011 Best Picture NomineesBlog post by Boomer54 Mark

I did a post in January with my top 3 movies for 2010. A couple of them were actually nominated for best picture. So here are all 10 nominees in one place with a few of my comments.
Here are the pictures nominated for best picture…

Black Swan
The Fighter
Inception
The Kids Are AllRight
The King’s Speech
127 Hours
Toy Story 3
The Social Network
True Grit
Winter’s Bone

Note: I realize that the videos “bleed” over to the margin on the right side. The movie trailers just view better with the larger version from YouTube.

Black Swan
A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis).

A Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER), BLACK SWAN takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.

The Fighter
The story revolves around the life of boxer “Irish” Micky Ward (Wahlberg) and trainer-brother Dick Eklund (Bale), chronicling their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Mass., through Eklund’s battle with drugs and Ward’s eventual world championship in London.

Amy Adams plays Charlene, a tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper from Massachusetts who ends up dating Mickey. Melissa Leo, plays the chain smoking mother and along with Adams was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Christian Bale lost over 40 pounds to play the crack addicted brother.

Inception
Leonardo DiCaprio stars in this incredibly creative sci-fi film that explores what the mind can do. Baby boomers may find this a little “out there” so be prepared.

The Kids Are Allright

Annette Benning and Julieann Moore are lesbians raising their test tube babies. Not my favorite movie. But Hollywood has a very large gay population, so I can see why it was nominated.

The King’s Speech and Secretariat are among AARP The Magazine’s Top 10 Movies for Grownups this year. I will add 1 Unstoppable and if you can over look the language, there are terrific performances in Mark Wahlberg’s film “The Fighter”.

The King’s Speech is an epic British drama film, telling the true story of the man who became King George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II. After his brother abdicates, George (‘Bertie’) reluctantly assumes the throne. Plagued by a dreaded stutter and considered unfit to be king, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist named Lionel Logue. Through a set of unexpected techniques, and as a result of an unlikely friendship, Bertie is able to find his voice and boldly lead the country through war.

127 Hours

This is a true story, about Aron Ralston who cut off his own arm to save his life. This is directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). James Franco gives a stunning performance. I actually liked this film, a lot people did not.

Toy Story 3

The only animated film nominated this year. Pixar and Disney continue to ride the Toy Story train of success. No, I have not seen this movie. I have read that the film although animated is a little dark and depressing even for an animated film. Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return as the voices for Woody and Buzz Lightyear.

The Social Network

David Fincher directed with Aaron Sorkin writing the screenplay. Jesse Eisenberg plays the smartest guy in the room. Justin Timberlake is evolving as an actor and plays the sleazy, swarthy the founder of Napster.

True Grit

What can I say. One of the last classic western films before “Blazing Saddles” originally done by an icon John Wayne. BTW…whatever happened to the original Mattie Ross, Kim Darby?

Jeff Bridges (one of all time favorite actors) is nominated again for best actor, with the Cohen Brothers writing and directing. Hailee Steinfeld is the new Mattie and is nominated for a best supporting actress.

Winter’s Bone

Oscar Nominated indie movie that will leave all of you thinking hard about the merciless darkness in human beings. The final cut is one of the most brutal even seen recently, yet through provoking.
Plot: An unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact.

My wife and I rented this movie, however, turned it off. Just too dark.

Here are a couple of additional movies that I really enjoyed this year and will make great rentals.

Secretariat, This powerful and thrilling journey of the 1973 Triple Crown winner and its owner Penny Chenery, played by Academy Award® and Golden Globe nominee Diane Lane, brings hope, heart and courage to audiences of all ages making SECRETARIAT a perfect film to add to the home library.

“This is one of the year’s best films,” states Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Unstoppable
An engineer and his conductor are in a race against time. They’re chasing the runaway train in a separate locomotive and need to bring it under control before it derails on a curve and causes a toxic spill that will decimate a town.
