Cease the Crease: What Does and Doesn’t Work for Fighting Facial Wrinkles

It happens. One day we wake up to find itty-bitty creases where smooth skin used to be. Then a few months or years later, those itty-bitty lines become a little bolder and more brazen, shouting to all we meet that we’ve been around a little longer than we care to admit.

Some think of wrinkles and fine lines as badges of honor. That’s definitely a rosy way to look at it. But while that glass-is-half-full mentality sure is admirable, the good majority of us don’t look upon wrinkles with any type of affection whatsoever. In fact, whatever we can do to get rid of them, we’re pretty much willing to try. Yet many of us stop short of surgery; that just seems too extreme, maybe. So how can we regain the youthful look we crave to go along with our youthful spirits? Here, a look at what will and won’t work for curing wrinkles.

The Nay’s:

Food treatments: The verdict is in: Keep your food on your plate, not on your face. While egg whites, honey, bananas, pineapples and a myriad of other foods have all been said to be nature’s answer to skin woes, clinically, none of these have ever been proven to provide lasting effects. In fact, smearing some foods on your face may cause an allergic reaction or breakouts. And who needs that to go along with their wrinkles?

Vitamin creams: While some vitamins (such as C) can aid in evening out the skin’s tone, none are particularly good at smoothing out creases. The most commonly known skin beauty vitamin, Vitamin E, can actually promote rashes if you have an unknown allergy to it. So since this vitey doesn’t stack up in the facial department, skip it and save some time and money.

Facial exercises: While contorting your face into odd configurations might provide endless entertainment for those around you, doing facial exercises in an effort to strengthen those tiny muscles simply doesn’t work. In fact, the more you scrunch, the more wrinkles you promote around the eyes, lips and forehead. Kind of sounds like defeating the purpose, doesn’t it?

The Yay’s:

Microdermabrasion: The beautiful cousin of exfoliation, microdermabrasion is a little more pushy about getting the job done. While exfoliation sloughs dead skin cells away, microdermabrasion does so to the extent that the skin reacts as if it’s wounded, working hard to make new skin to replace the old. What a way to outsmart Mother Nature, huh? What’s great is that at-home microdermabrasion kits can be found in various price ranges and are quick and convenient. Be sure to follow the directions explicitly, however, and always use sunscreen to protect that new and healthy skin.

Prescription Creams: While they may not be the most natural of facial fixes, prescription creams can work so well, they’re actually worth cheating on Mama Nature for. Creams that contain tretinoin (such as prescription-only Retin A or Renova) are good choices. If you’d rather go OTC, try drug store creams containing retinol. Also gaining attention are creams with high concentrations of alpha hydroxyl acid, which works as an exfoliater, spearheading the formation of new collagen and elastic fibers.

Prevention: This is a no-brainer, but it’s a method often overlooked. Trading hours on end in the hot summer sun for shady spots and wide-brimmed straw hats is a good start, as UVA rays are the most damaging to skin. Use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater religiously and keep yourself hydrated so your skin will be, too. Sleep on your back, rather than your side or stomach, and use a satin pillowcase, which glides over the skin instead of promoting bumps and creases.

Nobody ever said looking youthful was an easy task, but ditching outdated and clinically weak choices in favor of new and proven tactics can help you age even just a little more gracefully. Now, if only someone would figure out how to keep the grays away for good!

George Timothy Clooney (born May 6, 1961) in Lexington, Kentucky is an actor, film director, producer, and screenwriter. For his work as an actor, he has received two Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award. Clooney is noted for parlaying his celebrity into social activism and has served as one of the United Nations Messengers of Peace since January 31, 2008.

Academy Award winner George Clooney, quit his job as a broadcast journalist at the age of 21 and slept in a friend’s closet in his first year in Hollywood before he broke into television, and later into films.

Trivia: He is notorious for having a witty, wry sense of humor, which comes out at every turn in this interview. Clooney’s playfulness is obvious on screen and off as he shares one of his tricks he pulled on a friend, Matt Damon.

Once Damon, while vacationing in Clooney’s villa at Lake Como in Italy, and desperately wanting to lose 30 pounds after a movie role, was exercising twice a day and only ate salad. To get a good laugh, Clooney hired a woman who took in an inch or so almost daily from Damon’s pants without him knowing.

He kept on wondering how it was possible in God’s name that he seemed to be gaining weight as his pants were getting tighter and tighter while he was eating next to nothing and exercising vigorously. Having no children Clooney certainly seems to have found a way to entertain himself with his friends just the same.
