In 2020, the marketing leaders in organizations will be the ones that figured out how to make their products or services relevant to the over-50 crowd. That’s because the over-50 crowd will grow 21% in size in 10 years. The 18-49 crowd will remain the same size. We’re not making this up. It’s Census data.

2. They buy things. Lots of things. Overall, the over-50 crowd outspends the under-50 crowd by $400 billion. That’s more than Walmart sells annually. Want some of that action?

Reversing Real Estate Market? by our Real Estate Expert Tom Martinson

Case-Shiller index reports that home prices have reversed course and are finally rising again — some say: We have truly turned the corner here.  Case-Shiller has been the gloomiest, scariest-headline-producing monitor of the real estate market for the past three years.

Not only are home sales up,

new housing starts are up,

new permits are up, and

now the last of the doomsayers say that home prices are moving up.

 

• Housing has reduced in value by 20-60% over the past 3 years.
• More first-time homeowners and investors are buying real estate, especially at the low end of the market -competition is getting stiffer.
• Real Estate Sales are up for the 5th straight month and housing prices are up for the first time in 3 years.

With the economy the worst since the depression, people are coming up with ways to earn extra money to make ends meet on a monthly basis.

Selling stuff on eBay or Craigslist is a moneymaker for many, but some specialize in reselling one thing: books. There are a number of sites that facilitate used-book sales, including Amazon.com, Half.com and Cash4Books.net. Some folks haunt yard or library surplus sales, but poster “elizabethann” gets books for free at her job.

A lot of us boomers have bemoaned that our 401k is now a 201k, but a study finds that on the average only 15% of baby boomers wealth was in stocks.

A blog post by David Nicklaus of the St.Louis Post-Dispatch. A new National Bureau of Economic Research working paper, however, finds that fear to be vastly exaggerated. Three co-authors — two from Dartmouth and one from Texas Tech — look at portfolio data for 51- to 56-year-olds and estimate that just 15 percent of their total wealth was in stocks.

If that sounds low, consider that total wealth is a pretty broad term, including home equity and the present value of future Social Security benefits. Pensions and Social Security, in fact, account for roughly half of those Boomers’ total wealth. Here’s where the authors put stock-market losses in perspective:

Thus, a substantial and permanent decline in the stock market from its 2006 level means an average fall of several percentage points in average wealth. This loss is a significant one: percentage points of personal wealth should never be taken lightly. But it is not a life-changing loss for the average household.

What this indicates to me is that most baby boomers took the solid advice to be diversified in their investments. Most boomers do not look to their portfolios as the main source of their income for retirement.

Also, baby boomers unlike their parents do not look at retirement in the same way. Talk to most of my boomer friends and like me they will always work at something, whether it is making additional income or making a difference with full/part time volunteering.
